give beets a chance August 20, 2007
i admit, i took this title from someone else’s blog entry, somewhere, sometime, when i was looking for another beet recipe.
in barcelona we grilled the beets we bought one day, with tremendous results (ok, aside from those few crispy black ones…) in duessnitz i baked the root part, and sauteed the stalks and greens, and served them all together. just 2 days ago, M and i added on to that recipe, and tossed it all with goat cheese over pasta.
the recipes:
grilling:
- cut fresh beet roots into 1/4 inch slices (best to use big beets here, lest you lose them in the grill.)
- let marinate a bit in olive oil, salt and pepper (perhaps this also works if you don’t marinate but just brush on the oil, s&p?)
- grill over medium heat about 10 minutes each side. then test one to see – they might need more time.
baking:
- cut fresh beets into 1-inch cubes; save the stalks and leaves!
- toss with a bit of olive oil, salt and pepper – just enough oil to thinly coat
- bake at 200C/400F for about 35-45 minutes
- while beets are baking, cut the stalks and leaves into nice, bite-sized pieces
- sautee the stalks first, about 3-5 minute, then add the leaves
- remove from heat and wait for the roots to finish baking
- add baked beets and, voila! a beautiful side dish!
- or…
- serve with pasta and goat cheese for a meal
performing in Germany August 20, 2007
after barcelona, i was back in berlin for 2 days, then off to the lovely town of duessnitz to prepare for our 3 concerts nearby. besides having a wonderful time working with the group, i also enjoyed picking the vegetables out of the garden for every meal, and learning to drive a stick-shift (finally!)

a little kitty adopted us while we were there. we named him saltarello. he was particularly attentive during a 2-hour rehearsal one day, but then, aren’t we all transfixed by lutes and gambas?
some happy eaters. the beets, potatoes, tomatoes, leeks, and herbs were all still in the ground/on vines a mere hour and a half before this photo. mmm! many thanks to the Sommer family for housing us…

oh, it has been a long time since i blogged! i’ve been traveling. first i was in barcelona, where i met the 3-month-old M for the first time!!
above she’s in a new cute outfit H (her momma) bought while she and i were out shopping one day.
here you can see M, H, and N in a family portrait. note the cute red do-rag:
M works very hard. she eats, sleeps, cries, laughs, flirts, makes “o” faces, and was even working on holding her head up while on her tummy! here she is in her daddy’s arm after a long day:
